The Fort of Gavi? in recent decades it has been the subject of a series of important restoration interventions carried out by the Superintendency, which have gradually made the spaces of the so-called low fort visible to the public. Organized around a central court, slightly sloping, they have been recovered and re-used with different destinations. Starting in summer 2010, the visit to the fort is enriched with a new opportunity: a visit to the restored powder magazine. This ? located within a fortified terraced site on a pi level low, outside the main walled circle: the recent restoration has restored its powerful structures, set in the terrace and covered by a light roof, according to the rules that the military architecture reserved for these buildings. Intended for the shelter of dust, which was set aside in orderly rows of barrels, they had to be protected from humidity, which would have rendered the powder keg unusable, but also built in safety, to avoid risks for the Fort in the event of an accidental deflagration. Hence the custom of accommodating them in fortified but marginal spaces and setting them in an embankment. The great powder magazine of Gavi was designed and built according to these principles by a famous military engineer, Pietro Morettini, in 1718; in the last two years ? it has been the subject of a careful restoration funded by the Ministry of Goods and Activities Cultural. After the long abandonment, it is today made accessible for the first time for visitors, who will be able to experience the thrill of entering the fort's santabarbara and admiring the evocative view of the Gavi valley from the fortified crescent that houses it.
